Multiple Memorial Day weekend records were broken on the back of Lilo & Stitch, including the largest 4-day Memorial opening of all time at $182M (2022’s Top Gun: Maverick did $160M). And thanks to an additional $79M from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, this holiday weekend as a whole earned a record $330M to beat 2013’s total of $314M.
It was only last year when the two new holiday releases grossed 4-day totals of $32M and $31M, sparking cries about the end of theater-going as we know it. An odd year for sure as 2024 was a clear outlier when compared to other recent Memorial Day weekend performances.
Year | #1 New Release | #2 New Release | Total 4-Day |
2025 | Lilo & Stitch (182M) | Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (79M) | 330M |
2024 | Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (32M) | The Garfield Movie (31M) | 132M |
2023 | The Little Mermaid (118M) | The Machine (5M) | 203M |
2022 | Top Gun: Maverick (160M) | The Bob’s Burgers Movie (14M) | 223M |
2019 | Aladdin (116M) | Brightburn (9M) | 230M |
2018 | Solo: A Star Wars Story (103M) | – | 226M |
Additional attention should be paid to Final Destination: Bloodlines, which despite an expected -62.5% drop in its second weekend still managed to pull in $24M over 4 days for a current total of $94M. This upcoming weekend’s biggest newcomer has some serious work cut out for it.

Next Weekend: Expected to be severely overshadowed by the holiday biggies, next weekend is not looking good for any newcomers. 17 players selected Karate Kid: Legends, but the early tracking of $21M is just horrible. There also aren’t any early reviews on RT which is doubly concerning. The final weekend of May could very well be the time where SMP dreams die for select players.
