Brad Pitt does it again as F1: The Movie blew away the competition, more than doubling up the weekend’s second place movie with $57M and immediately landing at #6 on the list. This was Pitt’s second-biggest opening after 2013’s World War Z ($66M), and the first box office hit for Apple (never mind the actual cost). 17 players made the right call, with 3 now in the driver’s seat after picking both F1 and Final Destination: Bloodlines. Brilliant.
Despite tremendous marketing, M3GAN 2.0 was more like a M3GA-BUST with only $10M earned across three days. Looks like we will have 5 new names to add to the Hall of Boneheads!

- #2 How To Train Your Dragon moved up 1 spot as it crossed $200M.
- #3 Thunderbolts is trying so hard to reach $190M before calling it quits.
- #9 28 Years Later suffered the largest second-weekend drop among contenders at -67.5% (Final Destination: Bloodlines had a -62.5% hold).
- On the flip side, #10 Elio had the best second-weekend multiplier among contenders at 2.01x (Lilo and Mission: Impossible both had 1.91x).
Next Weekend: The weekend starts early as Jurassic World: Rebirth, our second unanimous selection of the summer, opens on Wednesday 7/2. Rebirth has the highest average placement of any movie at 2.1, but it’s got some big work to do to reach $400M. Early reviews are… not good at just 57%.
